FUNCTIONAL MANUAL THERAPYä is an integrated approach to restoring normal movement.  It combines soft tissue and joint mobilization with neuromuscular re-education and exercise.  This innovative approach is designed to help an individual with persistent muscle or joint pain, but will also benefit those who wish to enhance their ability to perform recreational and athletic activities.  Any person with a desire to improve their function can benefit.
Using FUNCTIONAL MANUAL THERAPYä, the physical therapist treats the body as an integrated functional unit.  Causes for inefficient or painful movement are identified through visual and palpatory evaluation of the body performing functional movements.  Manual therapy techniques are then used to mobilize or loosen up tight areas.  Once loosened up, specific movements from Feldenkrais Movement Lessonsä, Aston Patterningä, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Fascilation (PNF), and Alexander Techniquesä are taught to retrain the body to move correctly.
FUNCTIONAL MANUAL THERAPYä was developed over a period of 30 years by Gregg Johnson, P.T., and Vicki Saliba-Johnson, P.T., and taught through the Institute of Physical Art.
Members of Programs and Organizations who have benefited from FUNCTIONAL MANUAL THERAPYä: Chicago Bulls (NBA), Dallas Stars (NHL), Atlanta Braves (MLB), San Francisco 49ers (NFL), Miami Ballet, New York City Ballet, Olympic athletes, Olympic Ski Team, elite swimmers, Lucas Films, and a variety of high school and college athletes.
